About Jade Succulent 'Crassula'

The Jade succulent is worth having even for its name alone. More commonly known as the lucky plant, money plant, or money tree, Crassula ovata is an aesthetic plant native to the Kwazulu-Natal and Eastern Cape provinces of South America and Mozambique. Because of its low maintenance and robust properties, it is widely cultivated worldwide as a house or office plant. It is an evergreen plant with thick branches and shiny coin-shaped leaves accented with Fuschia margins. During the flowering season, some species even grow inflorescence with a bundle of pinkish-white and star-shaped flowers.

HEALTH BENEFITS

Taking care of the jade plant will improve the humidity in your environment which helps in respiratory health.

LOOKING AFTER THE PLANT

The first rule to keeping your plant alive is to avoid overwatering. Be careful to let the soil dry first in between watering. Ensure that your pot has good drainage, and never let your plant sit in a wet catch basin. The best medium to use for the Jade plant is a cactus mix to ensure proper drainage and aeration of the roots. It’s also best to keep your plants in a warm environment. During winter, bring your jade plant indoors. The temperature will freeze its water content, destroying its cells and killing the plant. Place your money plant in a bright area, but don’t let it be scorched by the midday sun, especially during summer. One of the best things about owning a jade plant is you can propagate it easily to make a family of jade plants or to share it with your family and friends. You can simply un-pot and divide the plant and propagate through stem cuttings. Another way is to remove a few healthy leaves and lay them on top of a potting mixture. In two weeks, you’ll begin to see tiny plants on the edges of your leaf cuttings.

PLANT CARE WITH PETS AND CHILDREN

The money plant is mildly toxic to pets and humans. In some cases, they cause dermatitis upon skin contact. Make sure to place your plant away from pets and children.
