Hoyas are sometimes referred to as “scent mimics”. These scent mimics can have a wide range of scents. Some can smell as honey while others like the ‘Corpse flower’ can smell of rotting meat. Most of Hoya’s smells are reminiscent of vanilla, chocolate, and other confectionery goods.

How to care for information:

  • Common Names: Lucky heart, Sweetheart Hoya, Heart Leaf
  • Hoyas are susceptible to root rot, it’s best to plant your hoya in a soil medium with high porosity. Add orchid bark and perlite to your soil medium.
  • Allow the soil to completely dry in between watering. The succulent leaves will hold water. During warmer months, keep the soil moist but not water logged.
  • Provide a trellis for extra support and keep the plant appearing nice and tidy.

The Hoya ‘Heart’ Story

Where is it from?
The Hoya ‘Heart’ is native throughout South China, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, and Java. 

Who is the Hoya ‘Heart’? 
This climbing epiphytic vine, has been documented growing upto 13 feet high in the wild. The Star shaped flowers range from varying hues of Pink with red to brown centers.

Is the Hoya ‘Heart’ the right plant for me?

Another easy to care for Hoya, the heart leaf hoya prefers a consistent environment. Allow soil to completely dry in between watering. The succulent leaves will hold water. During warmer months, keep the soil moist. Be warned the the ‘Heart’ Hoya can be a slower grower and may take months to grow a leaf but once it decides to grow it can explode with heart shaped leaves.

Light

Prefers bright, indirect light or filtered bright light

Water

Allow soil to completely dry in between watering. The succulent leaves will hold water. During warmer months, keep the soil moist.

Repotting

Can be done every 12-18 months. Choose a pot that is 2” larger in diameter than the original pot. Only do so when necessary as Hoyas prefer to be rootbound.

Soil

Use a well-draining, chunky medium.

Temperature

Average from 65°F - 75°F

Feeding

Follow a monthly fertilizing schedule when the plant is actively growing. In most cases, this is in the spring and summer. Use a balanced fertilizer - this means a ratio of NPK that is all the same. Ex: 10-10-10.

Grooming

Gently brush off any dust or debris on the foliage by using a damp cloth.

Care
