Imagine a miniature desert on your windowsill, each cactus sporting its own pattern of ribs, spines, and blooms (yes, they bloom!). Cacti come in all shapes and sizes, from spherical hedgehogs to flat-padded prickly pears. Yet, these spiny friends share remarkably simple needs, making them welcoming for new plant parents.
Mastering cactus care unlocks the secret to firm, healthy stems and vibrant flowers, even in the coziest indoor settings. This beginner-friendly guide shows you exactly how to take care of a cactus, how to look after cactus varieties of all kinds, and even how to care for a Christmas cactus so it dazzles every holiday season.
The Basics of Cactus Care

Light
When it comes to cactus care, remember that light is their life force. These plants evolved under harsh desert skies, so they can thrive with direct sun. Aim for six to eight hours of bright, direct sun each day. You may have been told that cacti can survive low-light conditions - but that’s not the point. The point is to care for your cactus, so much so that it flourishes.
Do rotate your pot weekly so each side receives equal rays. If you spot pale or elongated growth, it means your cactus is stretching for more light. In that case, move it closer to the glass or invest in an LED grow lamp rated for succulents plants.
Watering
Overwatering causes more cactus casualties than any other mistake. These spiny succulents store moisture in their stems, so they thrive on a classic soak-and-dry cycle. Wait until the soil is bone-dry at least 2 to 3 inches below the surface before you water again. In active growth (spring and summer), that might be every 7 to 14 days.
In dormancy (which is around late autumn and winter), you may water only once a month. When you do water, drench the pot until excess drains away, then discard any collected runoff.
Soil
The secret to happy roots is a mix that mimics sandy desert beds. If you give your cactus a proper blend, that ensures rapid drainage and ample aeration. Avoid garden soil or moisture-retentive mixes. Every 2 to 3 years, repot into a fresh mix to prevent salt buildup and to check for healthy, firm roots.
A recommended mix would be: 1 part standard potting soil, 1 part coarse perlite or horticultural sand, and 1 part crushed pumice or fine gravel.
Pots
Similar to its soil requirements, a pot must have good drainage. A pot with good drainage holes is a non-negotiable. Unglazed terracotta pots are perfect for desert cacti because they allow excess moisture to evaporate through their walls.
Ceramic pots also work if they have holes, but plastic planters often trap water and increase rot risk. Elevate the pot slightly on a pebble trivet or inverted saucer so it never sits in pooled water.
Common Problems
Here are a few common problems with cactus care:
- Wrinkled or shrivelled stems: It’s thirsty!
- Yellowing or translucent patches: It’s overwatered.
- Dark, mushy spots: Root rot.
- Pests: See below!
When it comes to the latter, repot immediately in a fresh, dry mix after trimming damaged roots. Just remember that regular observation turns guesswork into confidence in how to look after cactus health.
Pests

Dealing with pests is a whole thing when it comes to cactus care. Healthy and happy growers can attract mealybugs, scale insects, and fungus gnats. To remove pests, use a cotton swab soaked in rubbing alcohol. If gnats persist, let the soil dry out fully and consider a yellow sticky trap just above the surface.
Just inspect your cacti weekly and more so in the warmer months!
Seasonal Care
Cacti cycle between active growth and dormancy. Observing these phases helps prevent rot and encourages flowering.
Spring to Summer (Active Growth)
- Increase watering frequency moderately.
- Feed monthly with a cactus-specific fertilizer (low in nitrogen).
- Ensure full strength sun.
Autumn to Winter (Dormant Phase)
- Slash watering to once a month or less.
- Stop fertilizing altogether.
- Keep in the brightest, coolest spot you can (around 50 to 60°F).
Bonus Tip: How to Care for a Christmas Cactus (this is a special one)
When talking about seasons, we’d like to take this time to put the spotlight on the unique cactus known as the Christmas Cactus. Its needs differ from the usual!
- Light: Bright, indirect light to avoid scorching rays.
- Water: Keep evenly moist when buds form; allow slight drying between waterings at other times.
- Humidity: Prefers higher humidity by misting occasionally or setting on a pebble tray.
- Temperature: Night temperatures around 40 to 65°F encourage bud set.
